The Historic Preservation Commmission will be holding a public meeting on April, 2010 at 6pm in the City Council Chambers in City Hall, 220 SE Green Street. Items to be discused at the meeting include: Click here for: Agenda This will be the third public meeting to present information and answer questions about the City's effort to assist property owners in listing eligible properties in the National Register of Historic Places. Listing in the National Register helps property owners to qualify for federal and state rehabilitation tax credits. The area, Old Town East, includes 5 possible district nominations and one individual property nomination is located east of Douglas Street, south of 2nd Street, west of Missouri HWY 291, and north of 5th Street. At this meeting, historic preservation consultants will provide an overview of theNational Register program, particularly as it has been implemented in Lee's Summit and its potential effect on property owners as well as guidelines for voluntary participation in federal and state rehabilitation tax credit programs. This event is sponsored by the City of Lee's Summit's Department of Planning and Development and the City of Lee's Summit Historic Preservation Commission. A second public meeting will be held at 6:00 pm on Monday, September 21, 2009, at the City Hall Council Conference Room located at 220 SE Green Street to present information and answer questions about the City's effort to assist property owners in listing eligible properties in the National Register of Historic Places. Listing in the National Register helps property owners to qualify for federal and state rehabilitation tax credits. The area that includes 5 possible district nominations and one individual property nomination is located east of Douglas Street, south of 2nd Street, west of Missouri HWY 291, and north of 5th Street. Historic District Signs
As of May 1st, new historic district signs have been installed in the Howard and the Hearne's neighborhoods. Each post includes a historic district sign that identifies the name of the historic district. These historic districts are located in residential neighborhoods north and south of the Downtown area.
City Receives Approval for a Historic Preservation Grant
The Lee's Summit's Planning and Development Department announces the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has given approval for a 2009 Historic Preservation Certified Local Government (CLG) Grant in the amount of $10,000. The City applied for a total of $16,667 to fund the nomination of one individual property and five National Register District nomination applications located in an area east of Douglas Street, south of 2nd Street, west of Missouri HWY 291, and north of 5th Street. Approximately 115 properties in this general area will be reviewed to determine eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Todd George House Landmark Designation
On September 18, 2008, the City Council passed Ordinance 6697 approving the designation of the Todd George House and associated property, located at 408 SE 3rd Street, as a Local Historic Landmark Designation.
Hearne's Neighborhood Historic Districts
On August 27, 2008, the National Park Service listed the following three residential areas
in the National Register of Historic Places:
NE Douglas Street Residential Historic District - link to nomination
25 acres located north of downtown along NE Douglas Street from Vine to Maggie Streets.
NE Forest Avenue and NE Green Street Residential Historic District - link to nomination
1.5 acres clustered at the intersection of NE Forest Avenue and NE Green Street.
NE Green and 1st Streets Residential Historic District - link to nomination
6.5 acres located on the north side of NE 1st Street from Douglas to Johnson Streets and to
the north along the east side of NE Green Street to the north side of Maple Street.
